Our Mission
The Mission of the Philharmonia of Greater Kansas City is to engage communities by entertaining and educating through music.
Who We Are
The Philharmonia of Greater Kansas City is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit orchestra whose members are drawn from the greater Kansas City area, and are devoted to performing a wide range of symphonic and pops music. The orchestra is sponsored by an independent governing board. Membership in the orchestra is open by audition to qualified adults and students who rehearse weekly under the guidance of area professional musicians.
What We Do
The Philharmonia of Greater Kansas City performs four concerts a year, all designed to raise awareness and appreciation of well played music. The March concert is always a family concert. This year continues a 30 year history of annual family concerts for The Philharmonia.
We aspire to exceed expectations, unite communities, enchant, and educate through music.
Conducting Staff
Theodore Music, conductor
Theodore Musick, a percussionist and music educator in Kansas City, Kansas, holds Percussion Performance degrees from the University of Kansas (MM) and Washburn University (BM). He has studied with Michael Compitello, Tom Morgan, and Keith Mallory. He is the Assistant Band Director & Percussion Instructor at St. James Academy in Lenexa, Kansas and the Music Coordinator at Village Presbyterian Church in Prairie Village, Kansas.As a performer, Theodore is the Principal Percussionist with the Fountain City Brass Band. He won the Best Featured Soloist Prize in the U.S. Open Brass Band Championship with ‘Xylophonia’ and was hailed as performing with “a truly witty bit of xylophone magic” by 4barsrest, the brass band magazine. He recorded ‘Xylophonia’ on Fountain City’s album ‘Over the Rainbow.’ He regularly performs with the KC Philharmonia, Topeka Symphony Orchestra, and in the KC Metro area.
History
In 1987, Ted Albrecht founded The Philharmonia of Greater Kansas City as a reorganization of the existing community orchestra under his direction. In the five years that followed, Albrecht led the orchestra in establishing its new identity in the community. The orchestra played a wide variety of symphonic and popular pieces, premiered new works by local composers, performed the Kansas City premier of pierces by composures well known in the broader musical community. In addition to performing instrumental works ranging from Beethoven, Dvorak, and Tchaikovsky to Bernstein, Copland and Gershwin, the orchestra has featured talented soloists soprano Roberta Peters, soprano Suzanne Hillis Ackin, pianist Hyperion Knight, organist John Schaefer, cellist Ho Anthony Ahn and cellist Martin Storey. The orchestra has been joined by The Kansas City Symphony Chorus, The Heartland Men's Chorus, The Trinity Mixed Choir of the Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral, and The Kansas City Children's Chorus.Today, under the baton of Theodore Musick.
